Look, Fashion Week is about clothes but the settings, music, models, styling and makeup are all integral to best display the pieces. Hair and makeup, in particular, is important in presenting the brand’s image for the collection before it is bought in pieces or pulled for shoots and restyled and mixed with other brands. This is the last chance for the designer’s vision to be fully realised.
However, it is a symbiotic relationship. The hair and makeup isn’t simply background noise and, for some, it is the most interesting part. More and more, we see beauty shots getting emphasised after shows and, for good reason, as the creative energy of fashion weeks birth some serious Looks.
Here are some of my favourite looks from this season at London Fashion Week SS19.
1. Katie Ann McGuigan
The wet-look, tousled and slicked back locks, the healthy, glowing skin and the nude lips at Katie Ann McGuigan made for a low-key but chic look that is easy to replicate and effortlessly cool.
2. Ada Zanditon
The yellow shadow, strong pink blush brought to the cheeks, chin and above the brows, and uber-glossy skin created undersea-Princess vibes at Ada Zanditon and, paired with her holographic harnesses and accessories, was just magic.
3. Rosella May
Rosella May was a party of a presentation and the makeup was, accordingly fun, but very low-key: dewy skin and the only other adornment, a white lid, liner just above the mobile lid and then a stripe of orange, yellow, blue or white shadow right under the brow.
4. Micol Ragni
Slightly less wearable but no less visually appealing, the makeup at Micol Ragni was like something from a dystopian vision of a tribalistic future, as was the entire presentation. Think black or dark burgundy lipstick shades and a band of black across the eyes and the bridge of the nose. Unsettling and intense but I’m totally into it. Especially in the case of the model pictured who had the grungey two-tone hair I’ve always dreamed of.
5. Xu Zhi
Another simple but effective look, not unlike the Katie Ann McGuigan show, the Xu Zhi presentation was all slicked back locks, a classic pillarbox red statement lip and little else.
