Bean’s very own Chloe recently posted some recommendations of things she had been watching recently on her Instagram story so I thought I would do the same thing here. Most of the films and television shows I watch come via recommendations from friends or people I interact with on social media. I thought I’d stick to tv series (mostly Netflix) since I haven’t watched that many notable films recently besides Ant-Man and the Wasp (which I loved, FYI).
Who is America?
Who is America? is the latest creation from Sasha Baron Cohen. It’s a seven episode series on Showtime where he takes three new characters and interviews a lot of “unique” subjects across the US; the majority being republicans with extreme views. If you have watched any of his other tv series, you’ll know what to expect with this, it’s hilarious, cringey and jaw-dropping.
GLOW (Season 2)
GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) is on its second season on Netflix and, although it took me a while to get into it, by the end of each season I’ve been left wishing there was more. It’s got a great, diverse ensemble cast of mostly women and, because it’s set in the 80s, great costumes and music.
Orange is the New Black (Season 6)
I can’t believe this has been going for six seasons already but, thankfully, it gets better with each one. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat (or maybe not, it won’t be for everyone) but like GLOW, the ensemble cast of women is what makes this show. There are a LOT of characters, but with each episode you get to know one of them a bit better as they delve into their life before prison. It took me a few episodes to warm to this season after loving the previous one so much but now I’m firmly invested again and excited to see where they take it in the future.
Marcella (Season 1)
This was a recommendation from Karen from My Favorite Murder. Am I the only one who has a list of all of their recommendations on my phone? Anyway, I love a good British murder mystery series and though I’d give it a go since she recommended it. I ended up watching all eight episodes of the first season in the space of two days. Anna Friel plays the title character and is excellent as usual. If you watched Safe on Netflix, it’s a similar idea but I preferred Marcella.
Sharp Objects
Sharp Objects is the most recent addition to the list as I just started it last night. I ended up going to bed at 2am because I kept wanting to watch another episode. It’s a HBO show and is based on a novel by Gillian Flynn (who wrote Gone Girl). It’s got an incredible cast in Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson and Chris Messina and centres around Amy Adams’ character; a writer for a newspaper who travels back to her hometown in Missouri to cover the story of a possible serial killer, after a second young girl goes missing in the town in the space of a year. I’m hooked on this and Amy Adams gives another exceptional performance. It’s shot beautifully and has a great soundtrack too.
